Socialism: Commitment to Equality
Since its inception, the purpose of Socialism has been "to establish a society with no privileges and no relations of domination, which is organized democratically and based on the principles of freedom, equality and solidarity. Socialism aims to build a society that is based on the ideals of democracy where each individual is valuable in his or her own right. The purpose of Socialism is to create a solidary society with freedom and equality for all its citizens."
Likewise, the construction of Socialism can never be separated from the idea of achieving full citizenship for everyone, from the idea of a society of Human Rights.
These principles have motivated the Socialist Parties, in Argentina and all over the world, to fight for building societies that provide equal access to opportunities for all people, especially for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.
In the last few years, the level of awareness on this subject matter has increased and significant improvements have been achieved, even in the media which are increasingly reflecting the gay/lesbian/transgender subject from a respectful and realistic point of view, abandoning the derisive and degrading stereotype of homosexuality.
However, these improvements have not been enough and despite the increasing social support for different equal rights initiatives, the influence of the various conservative groups in politics and society is still very powerful.
Convinced that the flags of diversity are Socialist flags, the Partido Socialista, together with the civil society organizations that deal with this subject, has promoted and supported concrete actions from the executive and legislative branches in a progressionist approach.
This is case of the Área de la Diversidad Sexual (Sexual Diversity Area) in the city of Rosario, municipality which has been governed by the Partido Socialista for 19 years.
This area is the first institutional organization in Argentina dependent on the executive branch whose objective is to promote active public policies of social inclusion for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.
And in Parliament, Socialist legislators have presented numerous initiatives that cover the unresolved agenda of diversity in our country.
Those initiatives are:
- Same Sex Marriage Law
- Gender Identity Law, to provide trasgender people within the identity right
- Access to Health Care for LGBT people and Pension in the same sex couples
Identity Law
- Integral Sexual Education, including Sexual Diversity contents
- Creation of Sexual Diversity Parlamentary Commision within National Congress
- Equal treatment and opportunities Program to LGBT people
Socialism's commitment to this cause is a duty that cannot be waived, as it has always been until now, and the more Socialism grows in the country, progresses in local governments and provinces and its legislative representation increases, the higher the possibility of advancing towards a society with no exclusion and with equality for everyone, which would fulfill the maxims of Socialism.
